If there is one truth that life has never failed to teach me, it’s this: change is the only constant. Seasons shift, bodies age, circumstances evolve, and whether we welcome it or resist it, change comes. Often it arrives uninvited, altering our daily rhythms, our expectations, even our sense of who we are. And yet, in that very disruption, there’s an invitation: to adjust, to bend, and ultimately to grow.
Bending to Reality
In the world of physical practice, whether martial arts, weight training, or even tending a garden, our capabilities are tied to our present reality. There were times when my body could explode with strength, absorb punishment, and bounce back by sunrise. Those days are behind me. Age, injury, and other factors have drawn new boundaries around what is possible. To fight against those boundaries is to invite frustration and even harm. To bend to them, though, to acknowledge them with honesty, creates the possibility of working with reality rather than against it.
Adjusting Focus and Energy
Change asks us to redirect our energy. A martial artist who can no longer spar as intensely might devote themselves to refining technique or cultivating breathwork. A gardener who can no longer wrestle with heavy tools may discover the art of timing, soil preparation, or companion planting. A weightlifter whose joints protest heavy loads may find new vitality in mobility work, bodyweight training, or swimming.
Each pivot is not a defeat but an evolution, an acknowledgment that strength is not only in the body but in the adaptability of the spirit.
The Challenge and the Gift
I won’t pretend this is easy. Letting go of what once defined you can feel like a kind of loss. It can sting to realize that the paths you once walked with ease now feel distant. But hidden within that difficulty is a gift: the chance to see new paths that were invisible before. By accepting change, we open ourselves to possibilities that would have never revealed themselves otherwise.
As an older man, this has become painfully clear to me. Yet it has also brought clarity, peace, and even excitement. The very limitations I once resisted have revealed opportunities I might never have considered.
Enjoying the Ride
May your own journey, wherever you are on it, bring you both peace and purpose. May you find joy not just in holding on, but in letting go, so that new doors can open. And remember even as the seasons of life shift, there is beauty to be found in every stage.
Enjoy the ride.
